My oldest son is in year 3 and his homework has a large component specifically geared towards learning multiplication. He actually loves maths and finds number far easier to navigate than words.
Sitting with him last night whilst he finished off the last of his maths homework for the week he breezed through it without any help from me. When he’d finished he sat back and said “9’s, 10’s and 11’s are easy but 6’s, 7’s and 8’s are tricky”.
I told him how I always struggled with the 4 x tables to which he rolled his eyes and said “that’s super easy … you just double the double”.
Double the double!
Yes, that’s right … you just double the double. I have never in my life been told that the 4 times tables were as simple as double the double!
I know I’m repeating myself here, but seriously – how did I never know this?
At least with kids in school it’s like I’m getting a second education (or perhaps just learning things for the first time myself!).
